Springfield College invites applications for a full-time, live-in, Area Coordinator in the Office of Housing and Residence Life. The Area Coordinator (AC) is provided with an on-campus, furnished apartment. Under the supervision of the Assistant Director of Housing and Residence Life or the Director of Housing and Residence Life, this professional staff member will assist in the general supervision of college residence halls by coordinating the administrative, programmatic and developmental plans for a group of Graduate Resident Directors (RDs). The AC will provide leadership for the RDs by assisting them to create and manage living/learning experiences for all students living in diverse communities. The AC will also provide support for central office functions and special projects as assigned.
The Area Coordinator is involved in the oversight and assessment of a comprehensive housing and residence life program for approximately 2100 students (Springfield College has a three year residential requirement for undergraduate students and we house 365 seniors and over 100 graduate students). The residential system currently includes 7 traditional halls, 3 suite-style apartment areas, 27 houses and 13 apartments. Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to: recruit, select, train and provide ongoing direct supervision, development, and feedback for 2-4 graduate resident directors (RDs) and 4-8 undergraduate resident assistants (RAs); provide administrative leadership and oversight for one of three campus residential areas, including occupancy management, damage billing, and program budget management for assigned area; directly responsible for the development of a community housing approximately 200 residents; support and serve as a resource for RDs and RAs to create and implement educational, cultural, and social programs that are relevant, innovative and responsive to the needs to students in alignment with our college mission; work with the full complement of housing and residence life staff to create, implement and assess a residential engagement model with appropriate developmental outcomes for assigned residential area; provide leadership and coordination for Housing and Residence Life involvement in Division-wide Late Night and Weekend Programming; assist with the creation and implementation of graduate assistant training and/or resident assistant training, depending on area of assignment; participate in the centralized on-call administrative duty rotation schedule and serve as first responder when emergencies occur; serve on departmental and college-wide committees, depending on area of assignment. Assist in the design and implementation of program assessment tools; advise hall council, coordinate on-going leadership training with residence hall councils, and supervise the RDs in developing best practices to advise student groups; assist with the marketing of housing to students and provide recommendations for improving the quality of services and programs in the halls; coordinate and conduct room and building inspections, working with the Associate Director of Housing and Residence Life and Facilities to ensure timely response to work orders; work cooperatively with other campus offices including: All offices in the Division of Student Affairs as well as Facilities, Academic Affairs units, Public Safety, Admissions, etc.; assist with summer projects such as fall housing placement, summer housing, New Student Orientation (NSO) and staff training; assist with campus-wide event staffing including Family Weekend, Admission Open Houses, etc.; serve as a community standards hearing officer for incidents within residential communities; perform other duties and responsibilities related to but not limited to the position.
Master’s Degree in related field preferred, with a minimum of two years of live-in professional experience in housing and residence life. Strong supervision and programming experience as well as communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills, and the ability to work in a team environment while handling a variety of administrative tasks are essential. Excellent organizational, problem resolution and customer service skills are a must. High attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines. Proficiency with computer systems and software such as housing management software, student management software, etc. and MS Office Suite software. Ability to pass background check.
