Director, Career Center
Springfield College is delighted to announce an exceptional opportunity for an innovative and engaging leader and manager to become the new director of the College’s Career Center. Boasting a 96% placement rate, the new director will join a community committed to demonstrating the value of the Springfield College degree through post-graduation outcomes of our students and recent alumni. The director will be expected to take Springfield’s career and professional development initiatives to the next level, capitalizing on opportunities to more intentionally connect the academic and co-curricular experience to career. The Career Center serves approximately 4,500 graduate and undergraduate students with a department of 5 professional staff, 2 support staff, 1 graduate assistant and several student workers. The director is responsible for the overall administration and management of a comprehensive career center serving all academic programs at the College, and will provide leadership in developing innovative services and programs to meet the needs of undergraduate and graduate students, alumni and the employment community. The director will both support existing services and programs including career development, professional development, career planning, internship development, graduate school preparation, and assessment of services and develop new initiatives and efforts aligned with the College’s strategic plan.
The ideal candidate will have a keen understanding of how to best prepare students for the work world of the future. S/he will be a highly effective connector, collaborator, and communicator, who actively participates in the Springfield College community and the broader employment community. Key opportunities include but are not limited to:
· Revisiting the organization and roles of Career Center staff to integrate state-of-the-art practices, and ensure roles and responsibilities capitalize on strengths and best meet the ever-changing needs of our student and alumni and employer populations
· Developing a vibrant network of alumni and parents committed to expanding opportunities for students
· Working with Career Center staff to identify and reach underserved student populations
· Identifying and implementing student leadership positions in the Career Center, expanding on the pilot Peer Career Mentor program to engage students as both peer career advisors and brand ambassadors
· Leveraging relationships with faculty and employers, encouraging partnerships and innovation in engaged learning and experiential education
1. In consultation with the Vice President for Student Affairs, set the strategic vision and develop, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive career services strategy and program that supports the College's commitment to preparing graduates for professional success and then helping them launch their careers.
2. Lead staff in developing and implementing a comprehensive department strategy and shared strategic priorities to ensure that stakeholder needs are met and that students and alumni have access to relevant and timely career information.
3. Work collaboratively with the Associate Director for Engaged Learning to set the strategic direction of employer engagement and build and maintain relationships with employers, alumni and families to further cultivate and develop shadowing, internship and full-time opportunities for students as well as career education and programming opportunities in collaboration with employers and staff.
4. Develop understanding of the unique needs within the various schools and academic programs; prioritize and direct initiatives to develop programs and resources relevant to those needs in collaboration with faculty, department chairs and academic deans
5. Coordinate efforts with campus offices including enrollment management, communications, institutional research, alumni relations, schools and other departments across the College to effectively meet the needs of students – prospective, current and former. More specifically, work with Alumni Relations and the leadership in the School of Professional and Continuing Studies to identify the most effective and efficient opportunities to serve specific populations with existing staffing and resources.
6. Provide exemplary leadership, development, mentorship and supervision to Career Center staff. Provide support and assistance in setting performance goals, reaching goals, and engaging in self-assessment and conduct annual performance reviews.
7. In collaboration with Institutional Research and in partnership with faculty and academic affairs leadership, oversee collection of data to inform the post-graduate career outcomes survey, utilizing NACE guidelines, and partner with Communications, academic deans and department chairs to create publications that tell the story of our students’ success for prospective students and their families. Also, partner with Institutional Research to collect data from current students annually about their use of and satisfaction with services provided by the Career Center.
8. Maintain a regular schedule of student appointments (walk in and scheduled appointments) to ensure connectivity to student needs and understanding of the lived experiences of students and the Career Center team.
9. Oversee the department's budget and ensure that resources are aligned with priorities.
10. Represent Springfield College in various local, regional, state and national organizations to increase presence of the Springfield College Career Center and our role in workforce development and career education of students and alumni. Stay current with industry standards and changes, revise programs to appropriately reflect current and emerging trends. Regularly communicate industry feedback about student readiness and industry recruiting trends to campus community including but not limited to faculty and administration.
11. Stay current on changing economic and labor conditions and industry trends in state, region, nationally and globally. Reconstitute the Career Center Advisory Board to better provide guidance and timely information about trends that our faculty and students should be apprised of.
12. Serve on the Student Affairs Leadership Team and one or more of the implementation teams for the Division of Student Affairs strategic plan. Serve on various cross-functional teams or task forces to promote the vision and direction of the Career Center; contribute to the strategic planning of the College in order to evolve services and programs. Provide leadership for or assistance with various special programs and projects in line with the strategic direction of the College. Participate in college committees providing representation of the office on campus issues.
13. In conjunction with staff in the Career Center, develop content and provide course instruction for internship preparation class(es). Also provide instruction to Humanics Seminar and/or First Year Seminar course as requested by colleagues in Academic Affairs and Student Affairs, in consultation with the Vice President for Student Affairs.
14. Other duties as assigned.
This position is best filled by an individual with an advanced degree in a related field, and at least eight years of relevant and progressively responsible experience in a college or university career center. Proven leadership experience, excellent interpersonal, organizational, written and verbal communication skills, extensive contacts within the corporate or educational communities, excellent public relations and presentation skills, proven ability to develop long range planning and budget administration, ability to effectively market the College Career Center in securing professional placement for students with various academic disciplines and backgrounds, and knowledge of current career development theory, student development theory, job search methods, resume writing, and graduate school searches. Experienced with management and troubleshooting career management systems/technology. Ability to cultivate an inclusive, diverse and welcoming environment is required. Flexibility, optimism, a solid sense of humor and can do spirit are a must!
Some scheduled early morning, evening and weekend hours are required of this position – for student appointments, student programming, employer development, and enrollment management activities.
